Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don't really golf, so why would I want to go?
A: It's not about the golf! You'll have a great time, in good company. Truth is, many of the folks at this tournament come for the experience of spending time with friends who share a common interest of supporting the betterment of Scouting. For some, it may even be their first full game of golf. It's a very low pressure game, and we have lots of ways to help make sure everyone will have a fun time, regardless of experience. If you don't call yourself a golfer currently, you might decide you like it by the end of the DVGC! Read more about our game plan.

Q: I don't own any golf clubs, or I don't want to check a bag to bring them on the plane, so I can't come, right?
A: The golf course has a limited number of clubs available for rental for $15.00. If you would like to rent a set for the tournament please call the course ProShop at (480) 893-9772 in advance to reserve your set. We also know several folks in the Phoenix area with multiple sets who are willing to lend theirs to you. Don't sweat it; just bring yourself, ready to have a great time.

Q: I really can't make it this year, is there a way I can just donate to the cause?
A: You can give through our website on the Donate page, and we will forward your contribution directly to the Boy Scouts of America after the tournament. Give using your credit card and earn miles/points!

Q: Do I have to be a member of the Boy Scouts and/or Order of the Arrow?
A: No, in fact, we'd love for you to bring friends or your spouse. We welcome anyone who wishes to contribute to the cause. Bring a whole team!

Q: It's a lot of money just to play a round of golf, isn't it?
A: Yes and no. We're trying to make it as affordable as possible for you and hope to encourage some younger golfers to attend. If you're not from the Phoenix area, let us know and we'll try to help you out with overnight accommodations. And if you are able to contribute more $$ to the cause to sponsor additional golfers, we welcome you to do so.

Q: Where does all the money go?
A: The event raises money for the DVGC Legacy Fund: Supporting Our Legacy in Scouting In our 13 year history we have provided over $13,000 in financial contributions to the Maury Clancy American Indian Campership Fund, and support the Endowment of the Order of the Arrow and other Scouting Scholarship funds such as the OATC Scholarship Fund (part of the 2014 Philmont Staff Association Capital Campaign). Your registration and additional contributions covers 18-holes of golf, cart fee, practice balls for warm-up, player gift, tournament awards, lunch, an evening dinner party, and a donation to the fund.

Q: What else is there to do in the area? Should I stay for the whole weekend?
A: The greater Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe area has a lot to offer. Check our website for links to the Visitors Bureau websites, or contact us and we'll hook you up with some local recommendations. If there are enough folks who want to, we might be able to organize some group activities throughout the weekend.

Q: Why is it on a Friday and not a Saturday instead?
A: The DVGC is held the day before the Western Region OA Committee meeting, which is all day Saturday. Many folks who attend that committee meeting contribute to and/or participate in the DVGC.

Q: Will the DVGC ever be held outside Phoenix?
A: For 10 years the DVGC has been held in Phoenix, largely because the event has traditionally been coupled with an after-golf social and dinner event hosted by a member of the National Committee nearby. While this could change in the future, we do not have immediate plans to change the location.

Hotel Accommodations

Traditionally, the tournament committee has negotiated a special group rate at a selected property in close proximity to the golf tournament.

No organized events will be occurring at a centralized hotel and no group shuttles will be coordinated.  The tournament committee has elected to simply recommend a handful of hotel properties in the area, and guests should book on their own.

Below are our recommended hotels but you may find a more favorable rate elsewhere.  For 2023, no group room blocks or discounts have been secured on behalf of the tournament attendees.
